DIY doily t-shirt

Ever wondered what to do with all those vintage crochet doilies you seem to keep acquiring from charity shops? This lightning quick lace insertion DIY will show you how to transform an old t-shirt for a sexy, laid back, Summer style.

You will need:

  • an old t-shirt
  • a crochet doily (not the paper kind!!)
  • pins
  • scissors
  • sewing machine
  • matching thread

Step 1

Lay your t-shirt flat and decide where you want to position your doily (you could be quite daring here…). Pin into place.

Step 2

Using a wide zigzag stitch, carefully stitch two rows around the edge of the doily, remembering to backstitch at the start and finish of each round (for the sake of this tutorial we used red thread in the bobbin to show how it will look on the inside, obviously you will be using a thread that matches your tee!).

Step 3

Now very carefully cut out the fabric inside the stitching lines to reveal your doily!

And that’s it! Now pull on some faded cut-offs, a pair of cowboy boots and set your time machine to 1969…

Does anyone know of the best tool to cut the fabric out without cutting through the doily?

Hi Sarah, we just used a pair of sharp fabric scissors and very carefully snipped into the t-shirt fabric (lifting it slightly to pull it up and away from the doily), then just snipped near the lines of stitching, always being careful not to cut the doily.

      Hope this helps!

Gorgeous! I love how you put the design on the back. I’ve seen doily flowers used around the neckline but never like this. It looks very classy.
